About Telehealth

All services are delivered through online/telehealth via a HIPAA-secure video portal, Simple Practice. SimplePractice provides a Business Associates Agreement (BAA), which outlines the precautions they take to protect your privacy. You can find the BAA at: https://www.simplepractice.com/baa/

Telehealth Intensives offer you the comfort and security of your own home, or whatever location you choose, to do the work of your Intensive. You don’t have to get in a car and travel once the session is done. You can have pets, blankets, and comfort items with you to help get you through any rough spots. And you aren’t limited to a therapist near you.

Connecting to the video session is easy…you receive an email with a link ten minutes before your appointment. You click the link, adjust your camera and video settings, enter your name, then choose “Join Video Appointment.” No download or install is needed if you are using a laptop or desktop.

Tech For Telehealth/Online Intensives

Because we’re online for several hours at a time, there are some important technology requirements for Intensives. It’s great to use your phone or tablet for shorter therapy sessions or doctor visits, but mobile devices really don’t work for Intensives. So here is what you’ll need:

  • Desktop or laptop computer with a webcam, speakers, a 2.5 GHz processor, and 4 GB of RAM.
  • Internet connection that is at least 10mbps. For optimal results, a reliable, high-speed internet connection with a bandwidth of at least 10 mbps will minimize connection issues and provide the best quality. Wired connections are preferred if available. If you don’t have a wired connection, then try to choose a spot as close to your router as possible.
  • Headset or earbuds if there will be other people nearby.
  • Pre-Session Test: You can test out your connection, camera, and speakers before our session by using the Pre-Call Tool: https://tokbox.com/developer/tools/precall/

Maximizing Telehealth / Online Sessions

  • You need a private and dedicated space – you can’t conduct business, answer calls, or be a caregiver during an Intensive. It’s a time to set aside just for yourself.
  • Using a desktop or laptop computer with a camera and wired internet connection works best for reliability and visibility.
  • Wireless connections will result in slower responses, less visibility, and frequent disconnections.
  • Please turn off or silence your phone during your Intensive.
  • There may be technical difficulties with sound, video, and streaming. Please be familiar with your device settings and test them ahead of time.

Multi-State Licensing

Telehealth “happens” where the client is located, not where the therapist is. At least, that is the current legal definition.

I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in Indiana, California, and Nebraska. That means I’m allowed to treat anyone who is physically located anywhere in those states. Copies of my licenses are on the About Beverly page. Additionally, Florida and Arizona allow limited telehealth services provided by licensed clinicians from other states. If you’re unsure about whether we can work together, please contact me.

Depending on the laws of each country, I am able to treat people in some countries outside the United States. For example, British Columbia in Canada does not have licensing restrictions for psychotherapy. Neither does the Dominican Republic. If you have questions about whether we can work together, please contact me.
